The Emblem signifies the unity Nigeria. It also stands for the POWER and AUTHORITY of the government of Nigeria. The BLACK SHIED stands for the good and fertile soil. The EAGLE symbolizes the strength of Nigeria. The two HORSES represent the dignity and pride of Nigeria. The letter “Y” stands for river NIGER and BENUE, which flow through the land. The national flowers (cactus spectabilis), symbolize the beauty of Nigeria.
Nigeria’s Motto: UNITY and FAITH, PEACE and PROGRESS, is written on the COAT OF ARMS.

THE NATIONAL PLEDGE
I pledge to Nigeria my country
To be faithful, loyal and honest
To serve Nigeria with all my strength
To defend her Unity and uphold her honor & glory
So help me God.

The pledge was introduced in March 1978, by a Federal Military of Nigeria, leaded by General Olusegun Obasanjo.

NIGERIA FLAG

Nigeria’s flag is vertically divided into three equal parts. And it is coloured GREEN-WHITE-GREEN.
The green colours represent AGRICULTURAL potentials of the country, and white stands for UNITY & PEACE. It was designed by Mr. Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi in 1958.

NIGERIA’S ANTHEM

The British Anthem, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN was used at festivals & ceremonies before Nigeria’s Independence on October 1, 1960. In August, 1960, shortly before the independence; an anthem NIGERIA WE HAIL THEE composed by Miss L.J. Williams and arranged into music by Miss F. Brenda, both Britons, was adapted as Nigeria’s National Anthem.
The Federal Military Government, led by General O. Obasanjo, changed the Anthem in 1978. An anthem composed by a Nigerian, Mr. Benjamin Odiase, of Nigeria Police Band, is now used. It is a clarion call to all Nigerians.

THE ANTHEM
Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria’s call obey
To serve our fatherland, with love and strength and faith
The labour of our heroes past, shall never be in vain
To serve with heart and might
One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity
Oh God of creation, direct our noble cause
Guide our leaders’ right; help our youth the truth to know
In love and honesty to grow, and living just and true
Great lofty heights attain, to build a nation where
Peace and Justice shall reign
N/B: The anthem was first used on October 1, 1978.
